What You Need to Know About Home Renovations

BY MIKE HOLMES

I’ve been in the construction business, completing home renovations for over 35 years now. With my TV shows, I try to educate homeowners on what to look for in a contractor and bring awareness to shoddy workmanship and DIY projects gone bad. The housing market has changed quite a bit and more and more people are spending their money renovating instead of buying a new home. So how do you find the right person to tackle your kitchen or bathroom renovation? What you should be looking for in a renovator is similar to what you look for in a contractor.

A Renovation Needs To Last

A ‘quality’ renovation means it needs to look good and it needs to last.  The end result and look of a renovation depends on your contractor’s skill, but its longevity depends on the quality of the materials used. When it comes to building supplies, not all are created equal. That’s why I love working with Delonix Homes, they use the BEST materials for their custom homes and renovation projects. The result? Quality behind the walls. They even won Kitchen Renovator of The Year 2019 award at the Housing Excellence Awards.

When the renovation is complete, most clients don’t notice whether or not the contractor used high quality, more expensive products or the cheaper ones. But when you use a Holmes Approved Homes Renovator, you know they care about how the house is built, not just about the fancy finishes.

Beyond Lipstick and Mascara

Higher quality (and higher priced) materials have added features, such as moisture and mold inhibitors.  Extra steps are also taken in their manufacturing process to achieve higher durability, making them more resistant to wear and tear. But I can tell you the same two products used under the same conditions will not look the same five years later. Sure, a finished renovation done with cheaper products looks just as good now as one done with higher quality products. But within five years, you’ll be able to see a difference – both in the way it looks and in the way it performs.

Delonix takes your renovations one step further. They even invite my home inspectors to conduct a home inspection prior to your renovation to make sure you are prioritizing your renovation. Does it make sense to order porcelain tiles if we haven’t even looked at structure yet, made repairs or fixed a leak in the foundation? No.

Personally, I always think it’s best to slow down, plan and save for a renovation you know will be done right the first time, using quality products you know will last. Yes, we live in a consumer world where everything is disposable, but do you want your house to be too? Don’t settle for the cheapest option available when your home deserves better.
